Stop the Death Curse

Historical context illustration: Siegfried's red-dragon claw caught in the party's dragon trap amid the Wyrmheart hoard; the Death Curse, medusa, eagleman, and curse source are not depicted

Status: 🔴 Urgent — campaign spine; now directly afflicting the party Location: Chult

Objective

End the death curse afflicting Chult. As of Session 12, the party is directly cursed: each character loses 0.25 maximum HP per day, or 1 max HP every 4 days.

Known Requirements

  • Creatures: red dragon, medusa, eagleman.
  • Red-dragon lead: the party reached and killed Siegfried in Wyrmheart Mine, but remembered the clue only after his death and had no way to question the corpse.
  • Remaining direct clue paths: the medusa and eagleman. Siegfried’s corpse may become useful if the party later gains a way to speak with the dead.
  • The Aubrey ritual components are a separate thread for curing Dr. Aubrey’s wife’s vampirism, not the Death Curse itself.

Progress

  • Syndra demonstrated aboard the Brazen Pegasus that while the curse stands, resurrection magic cannot return the dead.
  • Syndra and Throbbin Mistwillow previously sent Anthe Grackles, Jacque LeFleur, Mikshail Valakovich, and Cheezy Sloth into the jungle. Syndra believed them dead, though later evidence shows LaFleur survived.
  • Session 12: the Golden Statue of Cayochan revealed that the whole party is now affected by the curse.
  • Session 13: the party entered Wyrmheart Mine and cleared the encountered kobold defenses and six dwarven specters. Travel and rests consumed time, but the transcript does not support a reliable cumulative maximum-HP loss total.
  • Session 14: the party killed Siegfried before asking where the curse lies. The red-dragon route is exhausted for now; the medusa/eagleman clues remain. Time advanced through another long rest, a short rest, and exploration, but no reliable cumulative maximum-HP loss total is stated.
  • Jacques LaFleur believes Ras Nsi may be responsible because of his tie to the undead, but he does not know the location of Ras Nsi’s city.

Session 17

After the first long rest outside the forge in Session 17, every player character was explicitly instructed to lose one maximum HP. Skeletal dreams and whispers accompanied it. This is a confirmed applied decrement, not a revised daily rate or cumulative campaign total. Further travel and rests occurred without another explicit decrement or a reconciled calendar.
