Wyrmheart Mine

Kind: Abandoned dwarven iron mine Region: Chult, south-southwest of the Aldani Basin
Status: Siegfried defeated; party split between the bottom hoard and mine entrance

Abandoned dwarven mine named by Jacques LaFleur in Session 12. A young red dragon named Siegfried laired deep inside, down around the fourth layer, and did not surface.

In Session 14, the party killed Siegfried and harvested the dragon heart needed for Mina Aubrey’s vampire-cure ritual. They remembered too late that the dragon might know the death curse’s location and had no way to question the corpse.

Explored in Session 13

The party reached and entered the mine in Session 13. Its entrance is a sulfurous, claw-gouged opening flanked by a ruined tool shed and office. Inside, rails spiral for hundreds of feet around a vast central stone column.

The explored levels contain:

  • Kobold alarms, traps, barricades, inventors, and a large egg nest.
  • Extensive dwarven remains and a charred workshop haunted by six specters, now destroyed.
  • Old mine carts, one of which the party repaired and used to descend.
  • A fortified lower chamber where the party ended the session after defeating its defenders; the visible treasure remains unlooted.

Faf recalled that Wyrmheart’s iron once supplied a separate dwarven stronghold whose name sounded like Hrakhamar. The spelling and exact relationship still need confirmation.

Explored in Session 14

The party rested in and looted the fortified lower chamber, then continued down. Pulling a rope-tethered boulder onto the rails damaged one part of the spiral route. Eight winged kobolds ambushed the party beyond the break; all eight were killed.

At the mine bottom, a waterfall feeds a pool of quippers and dwarven skeletons cover the ground. An elevated horizontal railway branch runs into an unexplored opening. Near Siegfried’s hoard, four kobold-sized red capes and four primitive wooden dragon masks hung as disguise props.

Siegfried woke beneath the gold and was killed after a battle in which a recovered dragon trap disabled one claw. The hoard yielded the self-refilling copper mug, the Bodius family painting, an unclaimed black dragon-scale scabbard, and the dragon heart, among other treasure.

At session end, Bodius, Isilrod, Bonzo, and Clarky remained near the bottom hoard. Faf and Moghammer had withdrawn to the entrance.

Open Questions

  • Confirm Hrakhamar and the possible Kobold Mountains regional name.
  • Explore the horizontal railway exit and resolve the quipper pool.
  • The transcript contradicts itself on whether all bottom-level chests were searched.
